El Mercado - Historical Market Square
San Antonians have been shopping at Market Square since the 1820's, before Texas joined the United States. The first businesses were a pharmacy and a dry goods store, and the area served as a marketplace for produce and other foods, including chili --- made and served by women known as "Chili Queens" --- beginning in the mid 1800s. Art, music, entertainment, and the colorful Mexican culture have always had a place in this vibrant downtown center.
